Uganda has experienced two decades of economic growth, leading to large population movements from rural areas to informal settlements around urban centers. High population growth – nearly triple the global average – stressed the water and sanitation services that exist. 51 percent of Ugandans lack access to safe water and 82 percent do not have access to improved sanitation facilities.

Nearly 90 percent of Uganda’s 35 million people live in small towns and rural areas, and roughly two thirds of them lack access to safe water. Poor sanitation worsens the problem. Waterborne diseases and infant mortality are widespread.

When the government of Uganda decided early last decade to decentralize rural water supplies and distribute grants to local governments to organize service, it awarded management contracts to private operators in dozens of towns. But most contracts were weak and the utilities have underperformed.

At the same time, access to financial services in Uganda has improved significantly over the last decade, mostly driven by the expansion in mobile-money services. This development, along with the private sector’s interest in including clients living at the base of the economic pyramid, primed the market for expansion of microfinance services to a larger share of the population.

Statistics show that

• 82% of the population’s sanitation facilities in Uganda have no hand-washing facilities – only 8% have water and soap;
• Urban households travel 200 metres to the main source of water compared to 800 metres in rural areas;
• Only 15% of people have access to water on tap, despite improvements

ECTS-Uganada is working with the communities using a number of plans to ensure the communities have safe water and practices safe hygyen
We Educate the communities on the benefits of consumming clean water , good waste disposal and providing solutions on how they can access safe water.
We have plans to work with the Uganda Ministry of Water and Environment to come up with the cheapest way to access clean water for these communites.
